Billionaire businessman Elon musk has been reported to have secretly funded conservative political groups, Building America’s Futuremany years. This came before public support for the former President Donald Trump’s bid for re-election.

Building America’s Future, a 501(c)(4) nonprofit group, is not required by federal law to disclose its financial supporters. These organizations, often called “dark money” groups, can support political causes without disclosing their funding sources.

Despite Musk’s previous public stance of not voting for a major US political party, his donation to Building America’s Future shows his financial support for right-wing causes. This revelation comes after Musk’s public endorsement of Trump and his announcement to fund a political action committee to fight Democrats.

Building America’s Future has been critical of the Biden administration on a number of issues, including illegal immigration, a topic Musk has frequently commented on. The organization also recently initiated a $10 million advertising campaign aimed at undermining Black support for the Vice President Kamala Harris.

Why It Matters: Kasturi’s financial support for the Republican cause began earlier and was more extensive than previously known, reported The Wall Street Journal.

He quietly donated tens of millions to groups linked to Trump aides Stephen Miller and the Governor of Florida Our Ron DeSantis presidential campaign. Musk’s contributions, largely through anonymous channels, have positioned him as a major donor to conservative causes, influencing US politics despite his mixed track record in supporting leading candidates.

The transgender issue has personal significance for Musk, as his transgender daughter publicly cut ties with him in April 2022, months before he financially supported Miller’s group, the Journal said.

Musk confirmed his independent political stance in November 2022, noting that while his party affiliation has historically been independent, his voting record has been Democratic until that year.

Kasturi’s political affiliation has come under scrutiny in recent years. In August, it was reported that a PAC founded by Musk used voter data to vote for Trump Kamala Harris. Later that month, it was revealed that the PAC was investigating its voter data collection activities.

In September, Musk’s support for Trump was further highlighted when he was labeled an ‘outspoken’ Trump supporter after a journalist was banned from X for publishing leaked documents relating to Trump’s partner.

This was followed by a warning from the billionaire Mark Cuban to Musk about Trump’s loyalty, as reported by Benzinga.
