Israel braces for Iranian response and attacks central Beirut as Lebanon faces ‘apocalyptic’ situation
An Israeli attack in the heart of the Lebanese capital Beirut killed at least nine people and wounded seven overnight, health officials said. The attack hit the Bachoura neighborhood, which is within walking distance of the prime minister’s headquarters, as well as many foreign embassies. Three people were killed immediately while three others died later from their injuries, the country’s Health Minister said.
An “apocalyptic” situation is escalating in Lebanon, health workers have warned, with around 1.2 million people displaced and many sleeping on the streets of Beirut. One US permanent resident was among the dead, and about 100 US citizens and their families left last night on evacuation flights as other countries announced their own plans.
Israel is also preparing a response to an Iranian missile attack earlier this week, Israeli and US officials said.

The North Carolina mountain town was devastated by Helene
The death toll from Hurricane Helene and its aftermath has risen to 190 across the Southeast state, according to an NBC News tally, with hundreds of people still missing. Thursday marked a week since the storm first made landfall in Florida before moving through parts of Georgia, North Carolina and Tennessee, leaving a trail of devastation. For residents of Swannanoa, North Carolina, about 20 miles east of Asheville, the shock is still raw.
NBC News reporter Deon Hampton spoke to residents of the small mountain town. brown mud coated some buildings still standing, he noted. Many other structures were reduced to fragments. And when the wind kicks up, the smell of dust and dirt fills the nostrils.
