Tips on how to hold meetings to increase productivity may be one of the ways Bezos and Amazon have been successful over the years.
What’s up: Bezos is one of the richest people in the world today and most of his wealth comes from the increase in the valuation of Amazon over the years, a company that survived the dot-com bubble and has diversified into new sectors such as streaming and the cloud.
The increase in wealth has been fueled by Amazon’s increasing valuation over the years, the company Bezos led for 27 years before stepping down as CEO in July 2021.
One of the reasons Amazon has been able to be so successful is Bezos’ leadership and business practices.
Companies like Amazon probably hold a lot of meetings between executives, employees and potential partners. One of Bezos’s practices during meetings with employees is to say the last thing, his current girlfriend Lauren Sanchez recently said it was one of the best business lessons he learned from him.
“I hold a lot of meetings, and I will talk first in the meeting, and (Bezos) goes, ‘No, no, no. You are the boss. You talk last. You let everyone else talk, so that they don’t get distracted by your opinion, ‘” Sánchez said in an interview with the Wall Street Journal.
Sánchez said that living with Bezos was like “having a master class every day.”

Why It Matters: Bezos previously shared that changing practices for meetings helped Amazon’s success and may have been “the smartest thing we’ve ever done” at the company.
Bezos shared in 2018 that Amazon is ditching PowerPoint presentations, opting to open meetings with 30 minutes of silent reading time. This gives the employee time to read the full memo covering the discussion topic before starting the meeting.
Similar to Bezos’ last speech, this meeting will see employees share their reactions to the memo before the CEO will share his own thoughts.
Bezos says the silent reading helps create “a context for what will be a great discussion.”
The former Amazon CEO said that silent reading time also ensures that attendees read notes instead of ignoring emails.
“Executives will bluff their way through the meeting as if they have read the memo, because we are busy, and so you have to actually carve out time for the memo to get read.”
Bezos also recommends keeping meetings as short as possible after the silent reading time is over. Sanchez said Bezos told him the key was to keep meetings to an hour if possible.
CNBC reported that other business leaders such as Twitter co-founder and former CEO Jack Dorsey also share the same belief in starting meetings with silent reading time to go through the meeting agenda.
“This practice makes time for everyone to be on the same page, allows us to work from multiple locations, and gets to the truth/critical thinking faster,” Dorsey said.
Business advice from Bezos can be worth for bosses and companies to consider and Amazon shares have risen 945% in the past 10 years and the company is now one of the largest in the world.
